3rd Media Review

This is Charlie Fink and I'm doing my 3rd media review on the topic of the DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks on both the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live servers.  This event or attack on the PSN and XBOX LIVE servers was on December 25, 2014.  I was on the server in the evening/nighttime and it said I couldn't log on; I thought it (the server) was acting up, but then I did some research on it and found out that there was a DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack and as I stated in my previous blog, A distributed Denial of Service Attack is or "occurs when multiple systems flood the bandwidth or resources of a targeted system, usually one or more web servers. Such an attack is often the result of multiple compromised systems (for example a botnet) flooding the targeted system with traffic." which crashes the server and makes it more difficult for someone or a company or corporation to put the material back online and with more material.  From: https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=Distributed+Denial+of+service or www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=Distributed+Denial+of+service I got the definition.

These threats by Lizard Squad went so far even as to threatening to kill the family or families of Sony PlayStation employees.  I just read that someone was arrested because of this incident and their relation to it.  From January 16th, 2015: http://venturebeat.com/2015/01/16/18-year-old-arrested-over-playstation-and-xbox-ddos-attacks/ states that an 18 year old from the UK or United Kingdom (in other words: England) was guilty of a cyber crime and has "seized electronic and digital devices in connection with a recent spate of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks aimed at Sony and Microsoft" according to the article.  It (the article) states that "A DDoS attack essentially overwhelms the target with a deluge of random data, causing the network to crash. In this case, the effect of the attack meant that PlayStation and Xbox gamers couldn’t access online services."  "Law enforcement arrested him on suspicion of the following crimes:
  • Unauthorized access to computer material contrary to Section 1 of Computer Misuse Act 1990.
  • Unauthorized access with intent to commit further offences contrary to Section 2 of Computer Misuse Act 1990.
  • Threats to kill contrary to Section 16 of Offenses Against the Person Act 1861."
Also, Anonymous has waged war against Lizard Squad to further their purpose of "Internet Activism" by me searching "Anonymous's purpose" on Google.  More information about Internet Activism can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_activism

In conclusion, I have learned many things from this assignment.  I learned about how to tweak internet searches to come up with better search results.  I also learned more information about so-called activist groups online and their intent.  I also learned what cyber crimes may be and what constitutes terrorism in some instances other than the traditional sense which is to instill a spirit of fear within people.  In summary, I learn these and much more through these 3 media reviews that I have done so far.
